Window Boxes, Indoors and Out
We love the unrehearsed window boxes of fall, when
enthusiasm for 'arrangements' gives way to improvisation. Wild weeds
or roadside grasses are the unexpected ‘fill’ that bring a tired
grouping back to life for a few more weeks. Chubby pumpkins, glossy
eggplants, multicolored squash, Indian corn, garlic, and beets take
the place of expired plants. Round shapes counterbalance stalky plants
trying to outrun the first killing frost with a final burst of energy.
When planning a spring window box, think ‘texture’. Herbs are ideal
because they flower in surprising ways and have such varied leaves.
Blend soft, spiky, and feathery elements to keep the eye amused.
